Methodist education in Africa started in the 19th century with the establishment of schools founded by missionaries, but the first institution of higher education, Africa University (AU), was founded in 1991 in Zimbabwe. Following AU’s example, many other institutions of higher education and theological education were created in other African countries, leading to 22 colleges and universities now connected to AAMIHE as well as 31 theological seminaries affiliated to AAUMTI. These associations have had joint meetings since 2013, alternating them according to the variety of countries and three language groups: after a conference in a Portuguese-speaking country (Angola, 2019) and a French-speaking country (Democratic Republic of Congo (2023), the associations will now meet in an English-speaking country (South Africa, 2025).
