Colegio Ward promoted an event on Human Rights, celebrating the traditional “Bishop Carlos Gattinoni Human Rights Day” with a focus on Higher Education. The event was held on October 24, celebrating the 30th edition of this initiative, since its foundation. The celebration include a special participation of Dr. Luis Moreno Ocampo and guests of the Permanent Assembly of Human Rights (APDH). Dr. Luis Moreno Ocampo is an Argentine lawyer who served as the first Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2012. Previously, he had played a major role in Argentina’s democratic transition and his work has been depicted in a movie nominated to an Oscar, Argentina 1985, which has been much celebrated recently.
The Ethics Department team of Colegio Ward worked for months preparing this activity. The students interviewed remotely Dr. Luis Moreno Ocampo, Former Prosecutor of the Junta Trial (1985), who participated in the first edition of the event, in 1993. He also carried out work to reconstruct the memory of the Day with the help of our Historical Archive and interviews that the students conducted with those who founded it. The day opened with words from the Director of the Higher Education at the institution, Lic. Daniela Mussini, and the General Director, Lic. Adriana Murriello. Also at the opening, Pastor Juan Gattinoni (’67), National Secretary of Life and Mission of the Argentine Evangelical Methodist Church and nephew of Bishop Carlos Gattinoni, now deceased, participated with a few words. Bishop Carlos Gattinoni and Bishop Federico Pagura were two leading Methodist Bishops in Argentina who played key roles in defending human rights during the military dictatorship in that country and helping the transition to democracy in Argentina.
Bella Friszman, Honorary President of the APDH, spoke at the event as well as Soledad Astudillo, Co-president of the APDH, and Paula Topasso, Coordinator of the Secretary of Education of the APDH.The day had the active participation of Higher Level students. A video with excerpts from the interview that the future teachers conducted with Dr. Moreno Ocampo is available on the Colegio Ward’s website: Colegio Ward :: El martes 24 de octubre se realizó una nueva edición de la Jornada de Derechos Humanos Obispo Carlos Gattinoni -del Nivel Superior-, en el 30º aniversario de su fundación, con la participación especial del Dr. Luis Moreno Ocampo e invitadas de la Asamblea Permanente de Derechos Humanos (APDH).
