In partnership with IAMSCU and GBHEM, Candler and Emory are celebrating the International Human Rights Day (December 10) and Human Rights Week with an event focusing on Indigenous Rights. This event will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The activities are schedule for December 11-12, 2023. This event builds on other recent IAMSCU activities on Indigenous Rights: a conference in Stockholm in September 2022 (with Helga West, a Sámi theologian), another conference in London in April 2023 (with Tink Tinker, Osage), and also prepares activities we are planning in conjunction with the World Methodist Council and Conference in August 2024 (with Indigenous Peoples from around the world). The impulse for this series of events was the process at Iliff School of Theology, which addressed the terrible legacy of a book in its library, covered with the skin of a Lenape human being. Based on this process, there are now questions about how other United Methodist-related educational institutions can address the legacy of colonialism and racism in their history and structure. This also includes former Methodist Mission Schools which are now under scrutiny. During the event, we will honor Dr. Tom Wolfe, former Vice-President of Syracuse University, former President of Iliff School of Theology, and former President of IAMSCU.
