IAMSCU celebrates a Special Easter in 2025, affirming the value of Christian Unity

2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, a council of church leaders and others called by the Emperor Constantine in the year 325 to reflect on the divine being of Jesus Christ. One of the important results of this Council was the consensus documented in one of the great Creeds of the Christian tradition – the Nicaean-Constantinopolitan Creed, which is recited to this day and has had a profound cultural and political influence throughout the centuries because it recognized the inner diversity of divinity while also affirming unity.

To mark this important year, Christian churches and educational institutions in various parts of the world as well as several ecumenical bodies are working together in a call for Christian Unity. Thus, in 2025, the Liturgical Calendar of the Eastern (Orthodox) Churches, Roman Catholic Church, Protestant and Evangelical Churches around the world coincide for the first time after centuries, signaling an important step toward the possibility of a common understanding, intercultural dialogue, collaborative work, and joint initiatives that contribute to peace and freedom, especially in many contexts where conflicts are often fueled by radical religious beliefs. It is noteworthy that Christian bodies started the year 2025 with a “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,” all Christians observed the Lenten Season, celebrated Easter, and are preparing for Pentecost on the same date. Contributing to these initiatives, the World Methodist Council (WMC) has promoted a series of events on this theme and the World Council of Churches (WCC) will hold its World Conference of Faith and Order in Egypt, celebrating 1,700 years of Nicaea.

A special moment in 2025 was the Easter celebration at the Colegio Ward, in Argentina, which is the institution led by the IAMSCU President, Adriana Murriello. Another special moment in this inter-religious movement was observed in the Easter celebration led by Pope Francis on April 20, 2025. His message and homily on Easter Sunday were read by Cardinal Angelo Comastri.

Francis reaffirmed his commitment to ecumenical collaboration and interfaith dialogue, insisted on joint work for peace and liberation, and paid attention to conflicts in places such as Palestine and Israel, Lebanon and Syria, Yemen, Ukraine and Russia, Myanmar, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where violence is generating more suffering each day. Exercising his prophetic voice, he also addressed the many challenges affecting society and education around the world, including the current crisis of lack of solidarity and compassion toward immigrants, and attacks on schools and hospitals which instill fear and violate the rights of children, vulnerable communities, and international students. Pope Francis insisted that human dignity, human rights, and the principle of humanity shall “never fail to be the hallmark of our daily actions.”

These statements are compatible with the ecumenical and interfaith values affirmed by the International Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (IAMSCU), and they were also echoed by many organizations promoting education in the multiple Christian traditions that are now striving for unity. As schools in the Wesleyan, Methodist, United, and Uniting traditions are often a minority, the call for freedom, peace, and unity exemplified by the ministry of Christ is also at the heart of their educational mission.
