2024 marks the 65th anniversary of the Advent Service, which was instituted by Professors Grady Hardin and Lloyd Pfautsch at Perkins School of Theology, at Southern Methodist University (SMUJ) in Dallas, TX (USA) in 1959. The service is closely tied to the history of Perkins’ Master of Sacred Music Program, which continues to plan and sponsor it. This event features a diverse group of liturgical and musical guests. The musical leadership for the service includes the Seminary Singers, Concordia (an ensemble of SMU’S Meadows School of the Arts), and select graduate students.
Since 1959, the Perkins School of Theology community has been celebrating the Season of Advent with an Annual Advent Service. In 2024 this is happening on Thursday, December 5, at 6 p.m. (MST) in the Perkins Chapel, on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
