United Methodist University of Mozambique (UMUM) graduates first Cohort

The United Methodist University of Mozambique (UMUM) is holding its First Graduation Ceremony on June 17. Located in Cambine, Inhambane (Mozambique), the university was established by the United Methodist Church in Mozambique, with the mission of seeking inclusion, complementarity, integration, and partnership in order to offer higher education without discrimination, leading to social transformation, aligned with the Mozambique National System of Education, and working with regional associations and the International Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (IAMSCU). After four years of its recognition as a university by the government of Mozambique, the university is now graduating 67 students with degrees in areas such as Administration, Education, Engineering, Social Sciences, and Theology. UMUM also offers a Master’s Program in Education with focus on Teaching and Learning.

The keynote speaker was Bishop Joaquina Nhanala, the only African female Bishop of the United Methodist Church in Africa, who has been leading the process to establish and sustain the university. With experience in international education in Kenya, Liberia, and Mozambique, Bishop Nhanala has been the driving force for Methodist education in the country, insisting that education needs to have a clear impact and provide solutions to the concrete problems faced by the people of Mozambique. Another speaker, President Julio Vilanculos, received his PhD in Education in South Africa, served as former President of the African Association of United Methodist Theological Institutions (AAUMTI), and is Vice-President of the African Association of Methodist Institutions of Higher Education (AAMIHE). Professor Dr. Jamisse Taimo, a former member of the government of Mozambique, President of its School of Diplomacy, and Secretary for Science and Technology for the Mozambican Ministry of Education, has been providing technical assistance to the university.
